How long do eyelash extensions last?
Why extensions fall out, how often you need fills, and the habits that make a set last longer.
Extensions do not fall out because they failed. They fall out because your natural lashes do. Every natural lash grows, rests and sheds on its own cycle, and the extension attached to it goes with it.
The normal timeline
Most people lose a few natural lashes every day. Over two to three weeks that adds up, and the set starts to look gappy. That is why fills are usually booked every two to three weeks. A fill removes grown out extensions and adds new ones to new lashes.
If you wait more than about four weeks, there may be too few extensions left to fill, and you may need a new full set.
What shortens the life of a set
- Oil based cleansers and makeup removers near the eyes
- Rubbing your eyes or sleeping face down in the pillow
- Picking or pulling at lashes as they grow out
- Skipping cleaning, which lets oil and makeup build up at the base
- Steam, saunas and very hot showers in the first day
What helps them last
- Keep them dry for the first 24 hours
- Clean them a few times a week with a lash safe foam cleanser
- Brush them out each morning with a clean spoolie
- Sleep on your back or use a silk pillowcase
- Book your fills on schedule
Every client is a little different. Your own shedding cycle, skin oiliness and routine all play a part, and Kelsey can suggest a fill schedule that fits you.
